Costume Jewelry

Contrary to popular belief costume jewelry has quite a vast history and is pretty similar to vintage jewelry.  It dates back to the 1930’s where it was produced as a cheap and disposable accessory that can be often worn but had no real value.  It often changed with the fashions and trends of the time and because of its low prices it was available to everyone.  Prior to the 1930’s cheaper jewelry was available was available however it was typically made from glass or other metals that were noticeably different than expensive jewelry.  This new costume type of jewelry was made to look exactly like the finer jewelry of the time.

Often times costume jewelry was made from metals that were very similar to silver and gold.  Sterling silver became popular at this time as a less expensive form of silver.  Gold was hard to replicate but sterling silver could be dyed or coated with a gold color.  Stones that were used were usually made of glass or even similar stones that were less expensive. During world War II the manufacture of jewelry made from metals was halted so that all metal was used for war efforts.  After the war manufacture resumed but the name “costume” didn’t continue commonly.

While that beautifully made and inexpensive jewelry made from less expensive stones and metals is still available it is not often referred to as costume.  Modernly, when we here costume jewelry we think of plastic jewelry that is used for children’s dress up or even on Halloween.  You can find either type of jewelry at specialty stores or online.  Styles of jewelry from the past are currently becoming very popular.  Many styles are being reproduced in costume styles.  It is also easy to find actual vintage pieces of costume jewelry.  While they were not meant to be handed down their legacy has made them extremely popular.  Authentic jewelry of this type is often heavier then the reproduced type that is widely available.  For adult costumes, check out MPcostumes.com
